Bye, Chicago!

I always to try to write my blog post using the following criteria: 1) something [somewhat] tech-related 2) what’s currently happening in life 3) something I’m interested in sharing.  For me, these rules help keep it true to heart, which makes blogging so much easier.  Though #1 may not qualify for this specific post, I wanted to share that I am moving to Portland, OR toward the end of April!  Lucky for me, I get to keep my job as a Bird, which seems to be one of the only constants in this big life change.  36 years is enough time in IL – it’s time to extend my swing span!

With that said, here are some things I’m learning about life in regards to moving across the country and leaving all I know behind:

  1. There are a million options to choose from when moving across the country.
You can: ship your stuff in a pod; ship boxes of stuff; drive across country with a trailer hitched; drive a rented moving truck and hitch the car; throw most of your crap away and shove the rest of your belongings into your car; ship your car; drive with a friend; drive alone.  Unfortunately, I can’t advise what to do other than what’s right for you.  Assess your situation carefully and figure out what you truly need and what you can part with.
  1. Not everything will end on your own terms.
Saying goodbye is rough.  I’m learning that a lot of the time, goodbyes don’t always happen how you’d imagine.  Prepare yourself; then allow yourself to let things go.
  1. If you’re not sad, something’s wrong.
For a lot of us, moving = loss.  Try to say your best goodbyes (…for now).  Get some closure.  Soak it ALL in for the last (sort of) time.  Also, it’s okay to cry; feel ALL the feels!
  1. You can always come back (for good or to visit).
Wherever you’re leaving will be there.  It will be different, yes; but it’s a place you can still call home.
  1. The important people will always be there for you.
If you have yet to go through stages of questioning who your real friends are, this will definitely be one of those times. Keep those who are important close to heart, and they will never leave your side, no matter how far away you move.
  1. Be excited about your new adventures! Explore and be open to your new life!  Punch fear in the face!
It’s normal to be afraid and skeptical, but what good will it do?  Things don’t always go the way you want, but that’s life, isn’t it?  Be positive; keep the vibes bright (spoken like a true Portlander?)   There’s no point in worrying and wasting energy obsessing about what might happen.  Explore.  Everything.  And enjoy life and be grateful.
