Out of Support: IT and Life

Just like Windows XP, all good things must come to an end.  If you are reading this, and still have Windows XP installed, it’s time to buy a new computer.  As my time with Birds on a Cable comes to a close, I want to reflect back on some of my most memorable experiences. Before I fly the coup, let me leave you with my Very Profound Life Advice.

1.    Show up early.  Best advice I can give anyone.  Whether it’s the start of your work day, a client meeting, or your weekly game night, be early or on time.   You would be surprised how big of a deal this is to most people.  Just do it!
2.    Finish on time.  This goes with the above statement.  Set expectations if you are not given any, and beat them.
3.    Be nice to people, even if they don’t reciprocate.  Especially in IT, there are always users you do not get along with.  Kill them with kindness.
4.    Get noticed, but in a good way.  Greet people as you walk by them, introduce yourself to unfamiliar faces.  Ask someone how their day is going, most people like to talk about themselves.  When you are working with a client, in any field, having that personal connection will make the interaction that much better.
5.    Ask for help.  People enjoy sharing their knowledge.

Below my monitor, I have a desk ornament that says, “Get Shit Done.” These are my words to live by no matter what job or task I am doing.  It’s a very simple phrase, but sometimes the simple things are overlooked.

Most challenging project: Upgrading 20-year-old analog phones to VOIP.
Favorite Boss: Mike Tyson from Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!
Most annoying:  It’s a tie. Country music in the office. When I receive an email with no body, and HELP! in the subject.
Best Event: B!RDversary
