Twitter ➡️ Bluesky

I wouldn’t call myself a social media user. I have accounts on Reddit and Twitter (some people call it X), used primarily as a knowledgebase and a news source, respectively. Reddit has its share of problems, but Twitter has been on a steady decline recently, and it’s no longer worth my time. So instead, I decided to give Bluesky a shot before completely throwing away the infinite scroll style of social media sites.

It’s been good so far, and if you’re an active Twitter user, I recommend it. The main deterrent to moving for me was having to rebuild my follow list so my feed would look more or less like it did on Twitter. I ended up using a service called Sky Follower Bridge since I saw recommendations of it floating around and it’s publicly available on GitHub. If you’re interested, note that the developer’s URL is https://www.sky-follower-bridge.dev; searching ‘Sky Follower Bridge’ in a search engine will likely bring up skyfollowerbridge.com as the first result (which is ostensibly a competing product that I can’t find any additional information on).

Instructions are on the extension’s website. All it requires is connecting your Bluesky account to the extension, and then navigating to your Twitter’s Following page. The extension automatically checks the accounts you’re following, checks Bluesky for accounts with the same name, and then gives you the option to follow each one individually. For example, let's say you were following menswear writer Derek Guy on Twitter, his handle is @dieworkwear. The extension will crosscheck Bluesky for a handle that mostly matches that (in this case, his Bluesky handle is @dieworkwear.bsky.social). Note that this system isn’t perfect, you will most likely run into false positives where someone else has taken a handle in Bluesky and whoever you were following on Twitter had to use something different, so you’ll either need to deal with that overtime or check each individual match.

Now, back to doom scrolling.
