Words Per Minute

In 7th Grade I completed an elective course in typing. Typewriting? Nah, I’m not that old. But the keyboard did look like this, complete with the no2 pencil placement:

Some of the other Birds mock how loudly I type – with authority, some (none) might say – and I wonder if it’s a product of being raised on a landscape of competitive typing. Keyboard buttons required elbow grease to properly place letters. I had to focus to win, to up my Word Per Minute game. No mistakes. No auto-correct. Shift to capitalize. Which hand is responsible for the letter, B?!

Recently I wondered what my WPM is these days, which led me down a rabbit hole. I’m not a professional, but my results weren’t bad. Per the internet, the average typist clocks in somewhere between 50 and 80 words per minute.

Typing Test says my speed is 107 WPM, but after 9 errors it adjusted to 98 WPM.

https://typing-speed-test.aoeu.eu/ put me at 92 WPM, and relayed that my score beats 96.57% of all others. While I find this unlikely, it’s also possible the website doesn’t receive very much traffic.

Lastly, https://play.typeracer.com/ was maddening, because it forced me to Backspace and correct errors. After maniacal backspacing, I came in with 91 WPM.

So, aren’t you curious? What have you got? Post your results.

And, in case you’re here for Christmas ideas, this IBM gem is selling on ebay, with a low low Buy-It-Now price of $150.
