So You Were Moving Up To Canada The Other Dayyy

Later this week I’ll be executing a plan my wife and I have been creating for the last several years: to move me to Canada so we can actually exist in the same location! These last 4 years have been stressful, but thanks to video calls, a plethora of texting and messaging apps, and the ability to get things delivered anywhere, we’ve not been completely separated. Now, here are the answers to all of the frequently asked questions I keep getting!

The End of the Internet (Explorer)

August 17, 1995 – June 15, 2022

We bow our heads this month to honor the death of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, lovingly known as IE. The Blue E was a rewritten version of Spyglass Mosaic, which accompanied the purchase of Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95. Unfortunately, this free version of IE meant that Microsoft did not have to pay royalties to Spyglass, Inc. This oopsie was followed by an $8 million lawsuit settlement in 1997. Alas, the browser continued to evolve, and boringly enough, it resulted in subsequent versions 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Then, an inexplicable, unexpected, and unnoticeable name change occurred, and Microsoft Internet Explorer became Windows Internet Explorer. Versions 7, 8, and 9 followed thereafter.

Google Fi

After moving into a new home recently, I found that my phone wasn’t getting reception in one of our bathrooms, which everyone knows is an inexcusable offense. I had already been kicking around the idea of switching phone providers for a while anyway, so we decided to give Google Fi a shot. Fi is Google’s phone service that effectively acts as an amalgam of T-Mobile, Spring, and U.S. Cellular networks. I’ve only ever talked to one other person who was a Fi subscriber five years ago, so I didn’t know what to expect. Despite that, I decided that drastic situations require drastic measures and clicked the dreaded Find Out More button in the latest spam email Google sent me about it.

Screen Time

Experts say adults should limit screen time outside of work to less than two hours per day.

This feels impossible. Let’s look at my phone use:

My current weekly screentime average is 2 hours, 25 minutes. Last week, 2h 41m. The week before that, 2h, 28m. The week I had covid? 3h 41m.

Farms of the Future

Corn: a simple plant that is a staple of the modern diet. It turned into all kinds of products outside of being tasty on its own—cornmeal, high fructose corn syrup, and of course, cornbread! But the process of producing it has changed with the times as modern technology makes the difficult task of farming easier. With robotics making inroads in production and shipping, it is no surprise that they are also making their way into farming.
