10 Fun and Interesting Facts about Herbie Hancock

It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for! I’ve been waiting ALL YEAR to write this up and people have been emailing me *NON STOP* about giving them their fix. Well wait no longer! Here are 10 exciting facts about beloved musical tour de force courier, Herbie Hancock.

1. Herbie Hancock was born on April 12th, 1940 in our very own Chicago, Illinois! Riding those high winds to auditory greatness.

2.  Say whaaaaaat?! He had a prominent supporting role in the box office smash Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets? I’m just kidding around, gang. I already knew all about this one.

3. The Miles Davis Quintet helped launch Herbie to immediate stardom in May of 1963. Talk about an honor, Miles!

4. Famous jokester Chris Farley made a HILARIOUS gaff in the classic film Tommy Boy, mixing up the names Herbie Hancock and John Hancock by accident. I’m busting up laughing just thinking about it!

5. Herbie has been a practitioner of Nichiren Buddhism since 1972. More Boddhisat-valuable knowledge bombs coming your way! Don’t give up now!

6. Herbie was voted one of Rolling Stone magazine’s Sexiest Musicians of the Year and prominently displayed on the August 1986 cover. He’s got the moves like Jagger!

7. Herbert Jeffrey Hancock (That’s his full name. Pretty cool, right?) is currently working on a new studio album with a large number of high-profile collaborators. Most notably, in most peoples’ opinions, is young upstart jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington. I know this is a lot to take in, but you have to keep going!

8. Kamasi Washington’s Heaven and Earth album released to much critical acclaim in June of 2018, with the single Street Fighter Mas paving the way. It has wracked up a whopping 2.9 million views on Youtube!

10.  I recently purchased Man-Child, Herbie Hancock’s fifteenth studio album, on vinyl recording! While unrelated to the inspiration for this article in any way, still a cool tidbit!
