The Ol’ Spark Box

The main reason I’m reaching out today is because I’ve been reading through the latest test results over at www.AV-comparatives.org and want to make sure your ol’ Spark Box is running the best software (I can’t remember if you remember, but I call the computer the ol’ Spark Box sometimes). Here is the gist of what I’ve found:

– Avast and Bitdefender received top marks in all categories for their consumer-grade antivirus product.

– Both products have free offerings with barebones threat protection. Avast’s free offering has the added benefit of providing the ability to schedule scans.

– Based on personal experience, Bitdefender’s premium option provides better overall protection while Avast’s provides a wider range of functions outside of threat protection. In particular, the VPN and password manager are boons for the average person.

– If you don’t want to use these products, stick to the other big-name players: Avira, Kaspersky, AVG, and ESET all have good offerings as well.

– While McAfee does reasonably well in this list, I personally would still recommend uninstalling it from any computer that it is plaguing.

– Although Windows Defender is turned on by default in Windows 10, it insufficient as a security product. Always install one of the third-party offerings.

I’ll stop calling it the ol’ Spark Box if you think it’s weird. I don’t think it’s weird. I do think you need to update your AV software.
