Camera Hacking

Mark-Zuckerberg

Can you imagine someone watching your every move? It sounds like a script to a horror film, but this is actually happening at alarming rates. And on top of it, the software only gets cheaper and easier to use.  I saw this story and it scared the crap out of me (Webcam Hack). Not only will hackers be looking through the webcam on your computer, they will also be looking at your home security system, and anything else you might have connected on your home network. Cameras are everywhere and personal privacy is at risk. Most people use cameras for security purposes but this new trend is reversing that idea.

Here are some best practices when it comes to digital cameras:

  1. This is number 1 for a reason: install a full-service anti-virus on all your devices and update it regularly. This practice will do most of the heavy lifting for you, in the background of the machine.
  2. Make sure all your software is up to date with patches. Vulnerabilities in software allow hackers to gain access to your devices. Take the time to update, or use a service to do it automatically for you.
  3. If you have your firewall turned off convenience-sake, turn it on now. There is a reason for it; the firewall will prevent unauthorized access to your device or network.
  4. Don’t click on suspicious links in emails or download files from people you don’t know. This is the easiest and most common way hackers can access your machine. Only download attachments and click on links in emails from people you trust. Even then, if something looks suspicious call before you risk it.
  5. Keep an eye on the indicator light on your laptop. If it starts coming on for no reason, that’s a good sign that your system has been compromised.
  6. Change the default passwords on everything. A simple google search can provide default passwords, so CHANGE THE PASSWORD. Routers, Printers, Computers, Cameras, EVERYTHING. Don’t let yourself be compromised because of a lazy mistake.

I saw a picture of Mark Zuckerberg recently – you know, the guy who owns the internet – and he had a piece of tape over the camera and microphone on his laptop. He is on the defense for exactly this type of situation. We should all probably take it just as seriously.
