My Healthy Addiction: Fantasy Football

Hello, Readers! This topic is near and dear to my heart, and no no, it’s not another blog about Wesley! This time, it’s fantasy football! YES! Football is BACK! Don’t stop reading! I promise this will be interesting whether you like fantasy football or not. The layers of a fantasy football league are deeper than the average football game.

For me, it’s hard to find time to communicate with friends. Life is busy, time passes, and the next thing you know it’s been a year since our last chat. Because most of my friends live outside of Chicago, it’s even more difficult to find that time together. Small talk is a waste, and we need a reason actually to communicate. I think everyone has dealt with this consequence of growing older – it sucks.

Community is the greatest attribute a fantasy football league can bring to your life. It builds a place where you can maintain and nurture friendships. Our Draft requires mandatory attendance, which means the entire group gets together once a year. We have a blast. We also have an email chain with year-round active communication. Whether it’s banter about the latest sports gossip, finding out someone is getting married, having a baby, or wishing happy birthday, it’s gives us a spot to start any conversation.

Now, this isn’t a casual league. We are all great friends, but we are alpha-competitive, too. We are also diverse in our beliefs. Things get heated. Balls are busted. Words are said that shouldn’t be. This behavior isn’t something to be proud of, but you know what? It’s a great outlet for it. Whether it’s related to our league, sports, politics, pop culture, music, etc., you’re in a safe zone to express yourself and have educated conversations.

I think in the end, I’m just feeling thankful to have a group of friends that I remain in contact with consistently. Life can get lonely, and an outlet like this is a great way to feel welcomed. However you find your community, whether through fantasy football or not, develop that communication. I promise, it will become your healthy addiction.
