Moving Hacks and Regrets, Part II

Almost 4 years ago, my partner and I moved into our new home (our first house purchase together). Never would I have thought we’d be here, transitioning from Portland to Denver, with a pitstop in Chicago. A lot has happened and changed the course of our lives (ahem, *pandemic*). This is the 3rd blog post I’ve made about moving. Let’s say I’ve grown a lot.

Here are some more hacks/regrets about moving across the country (again):

  1. Hire a Task Rabbit. Need someone to help you load/unload the truck (if you’re not hiring movers)? Hire a person or two through Task Rabbit! There are people on the app who’ve had lots of experience moving (or you can hire them to help pack or do any odd jobs you need).
  2. Pack Your Tools Last. You might need to disassemble something last minute, so pack your toolbox last.
  3. Number Your Boxes. I created an Excel spreadsheet and listed the contents of the boxes. I marked the corresponding numbers to the boxes. (I just found out that the military also does this when relocating families!)
  4. Go With Your Gut. Think you need way more boxes? Maybe all your stuff won’t fit in the UHaul? Follow your instinct. You are probably right.
  5. Rest is Productive. Don’t forget that a little rest goes a long way. If you think you can unload the UHaul after 9 hours of driving, you’re probably doin’ too much.
  6. Lists are Key! Make lists of things to do around the house, stuff you need to buy, tasks that need to be done, and stuff you always need with you. Your active brain will thank you later.

Good luck to anyone moving anywhere, at any time, to any place… everywhere. It’ll all be over soon!
