Spring Cleaning: A Tribute to Sparking Joy

Were you bitten by the ‘Spark Joy’ bug earlier in the year (or for the cool folks, way before that)? If you’re not sure what I’m referring to, Marie Kondo, author of the book, Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up (which was turned into the Netflix hit) is a professional organization consultant from Japan. She claims that using her ‘KonMarie’ methods to tidy up your home not only does just that, but that it can translate into your everyday life. After watching crying over the Netflix series, I immediately threw all my crap into the center of the room and started the process.

What sets apart this method from others is that Marie encourages you to go through each item and decide if it truly sparks joy. It’s a lot different than just keeping or throwing out what you may or may not need; it’s a mindful, introspective way to connect to your true feeling about some object, creating confidence that you genuinely love and care about it. Another great way to show your things the door, is giving thanks to the item that is no longer serving you. It’s a great way to let things go, and to create more space for items you enjoy. Arguably, same for your life – what things do you need to say goodbye to that don’t spark joy (at all or anymore)? That passive-aggressive friend, maybe? Or that app on your phone that you haven’t opened in over a year? Show it some gratitude (it did serve a purpose at some point!) and let it go.

If you’ve already tidied up using the KonMarie method, how’s it going? Don’t your drawers look super cute or what?! And if you’re looking to some organizing this spring, I highly recommend the book or watching the show. It might change your life.
